Mt. High has real skiing? Who would have thought?
We left early Tuesday morning and got to the mountain at 8:15. We parked in the East Resort, purchased a 1000 point ticket to split between the three of us and headed up the Mt. High Express lift.
It was about as empty as you could imagine on the day before Christmas eve- no lines and very few people on the trails, especially for Mt. High. The main run got a little crowded around 11, but we headed over to the far right (skier's right) side of the mountain and were literally alone in machine made powder.
I was also surprised to find moguls on a steep run. They call it a double-black, although I've seen my share of double-blacks in Tahoe (how modest), and this wasn't one of them. Either way, I would definitely compare this to the steepness of runs on
I also have 500 points left on the ticket. The 1000 point ticket was the price of 3 half days, and I got a free day out of it. Score!
Overall, I was very impressed by the mountain and I had a great time. It pays to work on Sundays when you get that kind of experience during the week and I'm guessing that it's totally empty on non-holidays.

Another six inches is expected on Monday. That will bring the total to a workable four feet. I'm not used to this kind of dump in SoCal. Growing up, I remember twenty foot weekends in Tahoe (El Nino, anybody?), but four feet in SoCal is miraculous, like God giving sight to a blind man.
Unfortunately I was unable to get a Mt. Baldy VIP coupon book. I was told to call back the next morning for four mornings in a row before leaving my number with someone, who didn't know what a VIP pass was and probably won't call me back.
For those that don't know, VIP passes go on sale once a year at the local ski expos. It's a great deal: four anytime tickets, two monday-friday tickets, four 2-for-1 coupons and two learn-to-ski-and-snowboard coupons, all for $60. I got mine last year at SnowJam, but Baldy didn't setup a booth this year. At least that's what they told me on the phone before the show. If you attended Ski Dazzle in LA this year, you scored.
So what to do? $180 6-pack at Mt. High? It's reliable, true. You get man-made snow, sometimes it's real but rare. No steeps. A well-maintained park. The most crowded ski resort per square inch in America. The secret? Ski weekdays. Can I do that? No.
Next option, pay exorbitant prices for Mt. Baldy, which has steep skiing and no lift lines. Unfortunately, you never know what to expect from Mt. Baldy. I went last year in the Spring, and it was awesome. I went in the early winter and they were charging $50 to walk around on a little patch of snow in front of the lodge. In other words if it's good, it's the best in Southern California (Mammoth excluded). If it's bad, you feel like you lost ten hands straight in blackjack and tipped all the rest of your money to the person who enabled your hangover.
So honestly, I hate to rip on Baldy because I completely understand their situation. See, Mt. Baldy has this real local mountain feel to it. The road getting up there is not easy. The patrol is straight out of a movie; last year they had a sign that said, "Be Careful, it's hard dick out there." About as helpful as a snowboarder patrolman who told my friend "Why the f*ck should I know?" when asked if he'd seen his lost camera. Plus, the biggest metropolis this side of the Mississippi is one hour from the base of the mountain. So why not charge the douchey Lakers fans who wear jeans tucked into their ski boots $50 a ticket for 60s style lifts? Gotta protect the mountain somehow. Makes you wonder why they even sell the VIP pass?
So I think this year might be a Mt. High year. I'm going up for a day this coming week and I need a guarantee and a cheap ticket. Hopefully working on Sunday and skiing on the 23rd won't be as busy as a normal day. And hopefully there's more to that mountain than what I've seen the past ten times I've skied there. Not likely as you can see the whole mountain from the parking lot.

Bloc Party rocks. Last night was the last stop on their US tour. They played House of Blues to a sold out audience for two hours.

The crowd really got into it. Halfway through I was talking to Chris about how cult-like everyone was. It seemed like 90% of the sold out audience knew every word to every song. The band was having a great time and playing some amazing music. The lead singer was crowd surfing. It was a great show.

This is a photo of the Aspen trees outside my parents house in the bay area. I used my dad's Sony A200 with exposure of 8 seconds in the exposure priority mode. It's completely unzoomed with the kit lens at 18mm.
These are some of my favorite trees. The leaves in fall look really cool against the white trunks. I get this wonderful, nostalgic feeling every time I see them.

It's been pouring for days and it's frigid, which to me means one thing: snow. The local mountains have received up to 3 feet of new snow, with plenty more in the forecasts for tonight and tomorrow.
I've been calling Mt. Baldy daily about purchasing a VIP pass, but they keep telling me to call back the next day. Hopefully I can pick one up soon- it's too good of a deal to share. If I don't I might have to consider other options such as the 6 for $180 deal at Mt. High. Mt. High is too LA for me though; I prefer the steeps at Baldy.
Keep snowing, baby. I need something to occupy my time while the HEP-A and e-coli infestation festers at the local surf breaks.

EDIT - I reinserted the drive into a different USB port and it seems to be working. Maybe it's on my end, or maybe it's just fickle like the guy on NewEgg said.
I purchased a PNY 4GB Attache Optima Pro USB drive to be used with ReadyBoost.

In bold white text, the box says "Enhanced for Windows ReadyBoost." Unfortunately, Windows Vista Ultimate 64 thinks the opposite: "This device does not have the required performance characteristics for use in speeding up your system." On NewEgg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820178198), people are having the same problems as me.
Occasionally, Ready Boost will refuse to work with this drive. Also, sometimes my two PCs won't recognize this drive. Typically, reinserting it will solve the problem but occasionally a reboot is needed. I had to return my first one because the file system somehow became corrupted.
I can't do anything to get it to work. Reformatting, re-inserting, "Test Again", whatever. It's going back tomorrow.
PNY, I'm sorry but you lost my business.

We went hiking this weekend and discovered a new sport, Mountain Unicycling (aka MUNI).

It was pretty intense. There is an annual "muni" meeting, and this year it just happened to be on Iron Mountain in San Diego last Saturday. It was cool for a little bit, but the 60 or so Unicyclists all over the place made the hike a little difficult. It was definitely unique.
Here are some photos.

Flickr opened up their service to the programming world with a publicly accessible API. As usual, I'm way behind the times and I've just discovered this feature.
I started using Flickr a few months back for photo hosting and I've been addicted ever since. So much in fact, that I haven't bothered updating my own pictures page. The solution of course was to create a section on my website that connects to Flickr using their API. The first iteration of this page is located at http://mswebby.com/flickr/sets.php.
Unfortunately, Flickr's API doesn't include any functions for getting Collections of photos, just Sets. So my site is completely disorganized at the moment.

eBay is on the down slope. It is clear through their recent policy changes that they are no longer concerned with maintaining a community-friendly product, but are instead aiming for short-term profits.
1. eBay has lowered the listing prices of fixed priced auctions.
Anybody who frequents eBay on a regular basis knows that only "eBay Spammers" list items at a fixed price. The reason is simple- people that make their living on eBay sales need to make a certain amount of money per listing. This retail approach is much less communal as it removes the auction "pull" from listings. The very heart of eBay is the auctions, and by removing this feature, eBay is no different than any other marketplace.
2. Sellers can no longer leave feedback.
eBay's auction model is based on seller and buyer legitimacy. Ask any European and they'll tell you how bad unregulated eBay is. The one power that users have in maintaining the legitimacy of the community is feedback, the tool for rating sellers and buyers based on their adherence to the common rules and guidelines of the web site.
eBay recently ruled against buyer feedback. eBay clearly wants to attract bidders at any cost, even at the legitimacy of their own community. By driving up the price of items, eBay will make more short-term profits.
3. No regulation of shipping prices.
The most frustrating problem for eBay buyers is the open-ended shipping policy. There is absolutely no regulation of shipping costs. Sellers can charge triple the cost of S&H, which further erodes the already weathered legitimacy of the community. This misleading practice suckers the "newbies" into buying items at a much higher price, which limits the site from growing to its full potential. This policy also enables the "eBay Spammers" who list items at 99 cents and charge twenty dollars for shipping.
eBay needs to take a stand now or they will soon find themselves in the tech landfill with Yahoo Auctions and the rest of the failures.

Windows/Apache/Mysql/PHP (WAMP) as opposed to LAMP (Linux).
0. Intro
There are many tutorials out there and they rarely work for me. I've decided to make my own and document the process here.
This tutorial was written using the following:
- php-5.2.6 (the ZIP file!!)
- Apache/2.2.9
- MySQL 5.0.51b
- Windows XP Professional
- IIS is disabled or not installed.
I. PHP
(1) Download the latest PHP Windows ZIP file from php.net.
(2) Unzip it somewhere on your hard drive (for example, "C:\php-5.2.6-Win32").
(3) Copy [PHP_ROOT]/php.ini-recommended to c:\WINDOWS\php.ini.
(4) Open c:\WINDOWS\php.ini.
(5) Change the extension_dir line to extension_dir = "[PHP_ROOT]\ext" (mine is extension_dir = "C:\php-5.2.6-Win32\ext").
(6) Change the includes_dir line to includes_dir = "[PHP_ROOT]\includes"
(7) Uncomment the line "extension = php_mysql.dll"
II. Apache
(1) Download the latest msi/exe from the Apache HTTP Server website.
(2) Install it as a service on port 80.
(3) Open [APACHE_ROOT]/conf/httpd.conf.
(4) Change Listen 80 to Listen 8080.
(5) Added index.php and index.htm to the DirectoryIndex directive (mine is DirectoryIndex index.php index.htm index.html).
(6) Add the following lines to the bottom of the file. You could also place them near other similar lines.
LoadModule php5_module "[PHP_ROOT]\php5apache2_2.dll"
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
(7) Uncomment "Include conf/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf"
(8) Save and close [APACHE_ROOT]/conf/httpd.conf.
(9) Open [APACHE_ROOT]/conf/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf.
(10) Add a new virtual host. I like doing this because it provides a template for listening on other ports. You'll probably end up
with many websites that require separate ports to function correctly.
<virtualhost>
DocumentRoot "[WEB_ROOT]"
<directory>
AllowOverride All
Options None
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</directory>
</virtualhost>
Later on, you can add new virtual hosts for websites that don't work with nested root directories.
For example:
Listen 8081
<virtualhost>
DocumentRoot "[WEB_ROOT]/myAwesomeWebsite"
<directory>
AllowOverride All
Options None
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</directory>
</virtualhost>
III. MySQL
(1) Download the latest MySQL Community Server from the mysql.com downloads section.
(2) Install the MySQL server with all the default options selected (as a development server, 20 concurrent connections, set a root
password you won't forget, etc...).
IV. Restart Apache
(1) Right click on My Computer, and click Manage.
(2) Double click on "Services and Applications" in the right frame.
(3) Select the Apache service, and click the restart link.
V. Test it.
(1) Create a file called index.php in your [WEB_ROOT] and put this inside: <?php phpinfo(); ?>
(2) Open up a browser window and go to http://localhost:8080
(3) If you get an error, something is wrong.
(4) Make sure MySQL has it's own subsection. If it doesn't, something is wrong.
Please leave comments if you had any trouble!

After losing my underwater camera I was desperate to find a camera to take its place. The Olympus 790SW was really cool for underwater photography, but no-good for anything else. Most of my photography is done from the beach anyway, so I decided to look into bigger cameras with higher-quality lenses. After weeks of research and a Craigslist subscription to Canon, Olympus and Nikon cameras, I arrived at the first budget Digital SLR from Canon, the EOS Digital Rebel 300d.
Check out these first pictures! They were taken with the 18-55mm multi-purpose kit lens.
Our cat, Minnie Winnie,

Spring weeds...

And Timmy the rabbit.

If you're looking for a budget DSLR, I totally recommend it. $250 paid for a large memory card, case, strap, the DSLR body, kit lens, two batteries and an extended Canon battery grip.
